Assessments and Grading

Create assessments, collect submissions, grade safely, attach answerbook evidence, and understand finalization rules.

Assessment ownership

Assessments remember who created them. Teacher and student views can show a small note such as "Created by John Smith" when that information is available.

  • Submission received notifications go to the assessment creator.
  • Missing submission notifications go to the assessment creator.
  • Overdue grading reminders go to the assessment creator.
  • All-students-submitted notifications go to the assessment creator.

Assessment setup

  • Publish Now makes the assessment available to enrolled students and sends the normal publication notification.
  • Save as Draft keeps the assessment private to authorized staff. Use the Drafts filter in the section assessment area to open it later. Drafts still count toward the section weightage limit.
  • Schedule Publish asks for a future date and time before the due date and time. Times use your browser local time zone. Until publication, students cannot see the assessment or its attachments.
  • Open a scheduled assessment to reschedule, publish now, or save as draft to cancel scheduling. Published assessments can be edited but cannot return to draft.
  • The backend checks schedules every minute, even when teachers are offline. After temporary downtime, eligible schedules publish on the next run. Closed sections or academic cycles and suspended organizations pause publication.

Assessment setup controls how work is collected and how marks contribute to the class result. Review total marks, weightage, due date, attachments, links, and submission settings before saving.

  • Total marks define the maximum score a student can receive.
  • Weightage controls how much the assessment contributes to the course percentage.
  • The due date helps students understand when work is expected and helps teachers track late or missing work.
  • Submissions should be enabled when students need to upload a file, paste a link, or write a response.
  • The assessment is attached to the correct section
  • Total marks match the actual assessment
  • Weightage matches the course grading plan
  • The due date is visible and realistic for students
  • Submission settings match how students are expected to turn in work

Grade input rules

Grades allow an exact 0 for missing work, cheating, or administrative decisions. Non-zero grades must be at least 0.5 and are rounded to one decimal place to avoid tiny decimal values that render incorrectly in portals.

Do not fail silently

When a grade violates the minimum rule, forms should show a one-line validation error instead of quietly changing or dropping the value.

InputAllowed?Why
0YesUsed for missing work, cheating decisions, or no-credit outcomes.
0.1 to 0.4NoTiny non-zero grades display poorly and are not useful for realistic grading.
0.5 or higherYesAccepted and rounded to one decimal place.
More than total marksNoA score cannot exceed the assessment maximum.
