Setup
Campus Navigation
Use building and room details to create a searchable, image-supported campus directory.
Why Building and Room Details Matter
| Detail | Why it is useful | Where users see it |
|---|---|---|
| Building image | Helps users recognize the building before they arrive. | Campus Navigation building section and building setup. |
| Room image | Helps users recognize the correct door, lab, hall, office, or room interior. A hallway photo facing the room door is usually best. | Campus Navigation room cards, room detail dialog, and room setup. |
| Building code | Gives a short stable identifier for search and CSV imports. | Building lists, room imports, Campus Navigation, and setup references. |
| Room code | Lets users find a room without using database IDs. | Room lists, section schedules, CSV imports, Campus Navigation, and site search. |
| Floor | Places the room inside the building hierarchy. | Campus Navigation floor groups, room setup, imports, and filters. |
| Landmark | Gives a memorable nearby clue such as “near reception” or “beside library stairs.” | Campus Navigation and searchable location text. |
| Directions note | Gives short human directions that a floor number alone cannot explain. | Campus Navigation building and room details. |
| Room type | Helps users filter for labs, offices, halls, washrooms, meeting rooms, and other space types. | Room filters, Campus Navigation filters, imports, and setup forms. |
| Sort order | Controls the order of buildings and rooms when natural alphabetical order is not enough. | Campus Navigation and setup views. |
Use real photos
A simple building exterior photo and a room doorway photo often help more than a drawn map. For rooms, stand in the hall and capture the door clearly. If possible, include a visible room sign, arrow, or marker pointing to the correct door.
Setup Flow
- 1Create departments first if buildings should be linked to academic or administrative areas.
- 2Create buildings with a clear name, code, optional image, landmark, and directions note.
- 3Create rooms under each building with a required floor, code, type, optional image, capacity, landmark, and directions note.
- 4For each room picture, prefer a hallway view that clearly shows the room door. Include the room sign or a marker pointing to the door when possible.
- 5Use room codes when importing sections or selecting default rooms.
- 6Open Campus Navigation from the sidebar. Start with the building directory, then open a building to browse rooms grouped by floor and review its departments and directions. Search rooms or filter by floor and room type within that building.
Floor is required
Every room needs a floor because Campus Navigation groups rooms by building and floor. If the school does not use floor numbers, use a consistent label such as Ground, Main, Basement, or Outdoor.
Room Detail Links
Each room in Campus Navigation can open a room detail dialog with a larger room picture, room details, building details, departments, and scheduled section context. The selected room is kept in the URL so staff can send someone directly to the room view.
- A building link uses /campus-navigation/view?building=BUILDING_ID. Add &room=ROOM_ID to open a specific room. Existing roomId links still open the dedicated view.
- Timetable room actions open the same URL-backed room detail view. In Buildings & Rooms, choose View in campus map from a building or room actions menu to open it directly.
- The room detail dialog shows the room picture large, but it does not repeat the building picture so the focus stays on finding the specific door or space.
CSV and Codes
Campus Navigation depends on human-readable codes. Room CSV imports use buildingCode to connect each room to a building, and users should never need database IDs for navigation setup.
| Import | Important columns | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Buildings CSV | name, code, address, description, landmark, directionsNote, sortOrder, departmentCodes | Use building codes that staff can recognize and reuse. |
| Rooms CSV | buildingCode, name, code, floor, type, capacity, landmark, directionsNote, sortOrder | buildingCode must match an existing building in the same school workspace. |
Future Visual Map
EduVerse keeps optional layout fields for future visual campus rendering, but Campus Navigation works fully without coordinates. Schools can get value today from structured hierarchy, photos, landmarks, and directions.
- Do not wait for a visual editor before adding building and room details.
- Use images and directions for practical day-to-day navigation.
- Reserved map fields can support a future visual map without changing the building and room records again.
